Bitcoin ticks up as crypto continues to shrug off Middle East conflict
Bitcoin ticked up slightly on Thursday, as the crypto continued to be mostly unaffected by the developments in the Middle East.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency last traded 2% higher at $71,653.5 by 20:23 ET (00:23 GMT).
Bitcoin appears to be consolidating around the $70,000 mark as markets digest the ongoing war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
Oil prices jump after Iran says critical Strait of Hormuz to remain shut
Oil prices rose sharply on Thursday and hit the key $100 per barrel level, after Iran’s new leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that a critical waterway for global shipping will remain closed as the U.S. and Israel continue an assault of the country.
Brent oil futures, the global benchmark, rose 8% to $99.34 a barrel by 12:57 ET (16:57 GMT), having earlier hit a session high at $101.57 a barrel. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed 8.6% to $94.77 per barrel.
Gold prices inch down as oil climbs, dollar firms amid ongoing Iran conflict
Gold prices edged lower on Thursday, as few signs of de-escalation in the U.S.-Israel war with Iran spurred flows into higher energy prices stoked inflation fears.
Spot gold had slid by 0.5% to $5,149.76 an ounce and gold futures had dropped by 0.5% at $5,155.10/oz as of 10:37 ET (14:37 GMT).
Oil climbs as tankers are attacked in Iraqi waters amid Middle East war
Oil prices climbed on Thursday after Iraqi security officials said Iranian explosive-laden boats had hit two fuel oil tankers amid other global supply disruptions from the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
Brent futures rose $5.69, or 6.19%, to $97.67 a barrel at 0118 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was up $5.11, or 5.86%, to $92.36.
